The first time we stopped in on this lake was in May 2005, we didn’t know what to expect so we were not equipped to hike around the entire lake back then but we did make it to the foot bridge. This visit two years later – August 25, 2007 we had the goal of viewing the sights from all sides. We arrived in the parking lot around 10:45 and got set up for our hike. The place was quite empty when we arrived and it looked like it was going to be a great day for hiking and picture taking.
We set off south to capture the views along the same path I followed in 2005. The marshy southern area offers some lovely textures for photos and the foot bridge attracted my attention last time as it has a very rich design with many interesting lines and patterns. So my hopes were high that this trip would yield some good captures. As we made our way to the far side and over the bridge we noticed a few fellow lake lovers setting up for a day of fishing and general enjoyment in the outdoors.
The first section heading north on the back side of the lake offered few photo opportunities of the lake. We were well encased in the second growth forest and under brush and I was beginning to wonder if all the good stuff was on the other side of the lake. About half way back we came to a nice area free of under-growth where we could stop for lunch and enjoy a glimpse of the lake. It was our first real opportunity to grab a few good shots from the west side of the lake and I didn’t wait to get started. After a few bites and a short rest we were back on the trail heading to the more rugged northern end.
It wasn’t long before we came to a string of lovely viewpoints of the lake. These ranged from water level to 50+ feet up on the side of sheer drops. The day had improved even more, and was offering a lovely mixture of cloud and sun. While enjoying the view and hiking we came across several groups traveling the reverse direction. At one point we passed a group of older teens enjoying the water and who we later saw from across the lake were warming up by their camp fire. The far north end of the lake was more obscured again and we didn’t get too many more lake views till well on our way back.
Once we got back to the water we soon came upon a long stair case leading up from lake level to the top of the rock face we saw from across the lake. We climbed that and rested at the top of the cliff with another great view before climbing up further on our way back to the car. By this point I was getting quite tired and no longer able to see much to photograph. We will definitely need to come back to the lake and hike it the other way to pick up on the sights we missed. It was well worth the time to explore and the quality of the views was very good.
