Ethan and I left home at a reasonable hour, we had a bit of driving to do to get to the Squamish area and as the town is surrounded by mountains, the sun drops below the western ridge quite early. Upon arrival I made contact with a local Ham radio operator who I had chatted with the day before. He suggested a few spots to try along the river, so we quickly made our way to the dike and searched for the big birds.
We initially headed north along the dike studying the river for signs of interest but nothing caught our eye so we turned south and explored some new areas. There were a number of people out walking their four legged pets and generally enjoying the cool air and sunshine. As we made our way to the end of the dike I found some beautiful views of the mountains and the salt marsh. This area has a wide variety of sights and is well worth coming back to once some of the trees are in leaf.
The dike area had only a single eagle to be seen and so we were off to the logging roads further up the Squamish River. When we arrived at the FSR I decided to head up the Ashlu Creek area first. Very quickly we noticed a huge change, they had started construction on a run-of-the-river power station and construction vehicles were busy working. The area along the road had been cleared for transmission lines and we were dodging large trucks moving rock from the blasting. I decided to go only a short way up the road to avoid any confrontations with the large trucks. Though somewhat disruptive in the construction phase, I am generally in favour of these small low-impact power projects. We need to find green power somewhere and this is likely the best way for he area.
Though we found a small frozen lake to explore there were no birds here. So back to the mainline where we finally spotted a few birds. We didn’t get very far up the Squamish FSR due to the deep snow and I didn’t feel like putting on the chains. So we turned back and headed back to Squamish for a second Latte. On the return home I felt like exploring the Britannia Beach area. We quickly discovered a whole new sub-division being developed with phenomenal views of the Sound, the sunsets will be remarkable and I will be back to capture a few before too long.
We drove back down to the Sea-to-Sky highway and headed home. When we arrived in the Nicomekl flats we took a few moments to view and capture the sunset. It was a fitting way to cap off the day of lovely views. It was a good trip even though the number of birds we found was minimal.
